Ask Useless Trivia!

This question comes from Corey: Is there a superhero named Shazam?

My answer: No, "Shazam!" is the magic word used to turn Billy Batson into Captain Marvel. DC Comics is not allowed to use the name "Captain Marvel" in any promotional way, because Marvel Comics trademarked the name before DC settled its lawsuit with the company that Captain Marvel originally was produced by. By the time Captain Marvel became a DC hero, Marvel already had a character with a similar name. By the way, Shazam is a acronym for Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury - Billy Batson gets their abilities when he turns into Captain Marvel.
